Architecture Movability

Program of moving

Though architecture has kept moving over 1000years, it is transport the same function to different location. So the Thesis will study change the function of buildings by make it moves and in this stage, it may focus on the way using movability to build architecture and how it changes its program via moving.

What

This topic is trying to study the movability of Architecture and through the movability whether architecture could build itself and change some place eventually. Hence the issue will not treat movable as something elusive as to study the character in certain location, the movability should be something with a root which locate the movability in specific place and by the vague idea between there are some sites, there is a site and there is no a site. The railway is fixed to the ground while the train can going through the country by them.

It is very clear to tell from the chart about the properties of all sites. During the one hundred years, the site No.1, the station, has change four times from industrial land to residential land. And the most important reason to alter it may be the Shanghai Inner Ring Highway, which separate sites into industrial land and residential land in late 20th century and early 21st century.

So there is a dilemma in this large site and the enormous architecture will be design here, it should have some function to benefit the people nearby, but it is also very hard to define what people, as the diagram show, will live here for the next hundred years. Since that, for the programs of the site, at least for the north site, there should not be architecture with a perpetual function. So the building there which served by the railway should be architecture with enormous open space.

Why

From yurt to carriage, moving architecture keeps finding a better way to reduce the problem cause by moving, make the house as similar as normal house and mostly focus on the private space and the space station which is a mobile dwelling with all the facilities and life support systems that its crew needs to survive in the severe conditions of space1may do the best job. But in the walking city, Ron Herron suggests a series of desirability and benefit to drive the city moving and city becomes an enormous creature.

In the case of the Storefront for Art and Architecture, Holl talks about the relationship between city and moving building, “The idea that the city infiltrates the gallery, that the gallery is not a world unto the artist and gallery director only, not an autonomous division from the street, but that the street meets this elite world and they merge.” The movable building provides a large toy for the city.

In Flexible Housing, Schneider suggests the meaning of flexible, something that can move escapes the shackles of tradition, and something that can be changed is forever new. This is both the foundation and target of movable buildings and suggests an interesting dilemma about movable architecture: there is function defining the building, but function could be changed; there is site locating the building, but site could be altered.

How

With the help of the railway, this project will become a long-term develop in time. Railway contains the possibility and ability of transportation which will the site, become also a way to build itself.

Since then, at the beginning of this development, a reconstructed train will carries workers, material and machine to the station. After the train going inside the old station, by putting the machine and material out, the station will become a temporary “factory” and produce architecture. As the architecture will be moved by the railway and move on the railway, the size when they move and when they stay should be different because of the railway properties. Diagram above is the four basic units of railway with which can be transformed easily. Besides those four structure system before, there is also one type of structure is the hybrid. By using more than one structure system could make the building much bigger and more complex. And finally as the cover show, the function of buildings will change during a day. After all construction, the train will leave and go to next city.
