Central: The Super Tram Stop

Authors. CHI Marcus Daniel Yuri, LEE Hong Ting Katrina, SO Kiu Yin Safina

Central is known for being densely populated and having a high degree of mobility. The new tram stop design is meant to improve the circulation means of transportation as well as possibly introduce more public space for social interactions.

The stops are located mainly in the middle of major roads and are very accessible. They are generally long concrete islands that have some form of shelter as well as some handrails. However, it has the problem of overcrowding and possible safety hazards, as too many have to line up on these “islands” between busy roads.

To improve the overcrowding problem, we submit the following proposals. First, we added another level to the existing tram with benches installed on the second level. There are two doors on the upper deck as well. This way, during rush hours the capacity of the stop can be doubled, and the increase in entrances will facilitate loading and unloading. A possible problem is the difficultly of monitoring by the driver, as currently the driver supervises passengers who pay when they get off. Concerning the safety hazards, since the distance between the tram and the passengers waiting at the stops is quite close, the introduction of guardrails and yellow safety lines are our proposed safety measures.
