Pokfulam: A Burning Village

Authors. MAI Zi Xin Grace, NG Cheuk Yin Priscilla, TSANG Yuen Nam

Our group focused on the Pokfulam village that has existed for three hundred years. It is a conservative, self-sustainable and identifiable village. The objective of our project is to preserve the local culture and open a floor for visitors. First of all, the Fire Dragon Festival, which is a traditional festival, takes place in this old village once a year. Second, people from other regions do not have much knowledge about the Pokfulam traditional culture and festivals. If the villagers keep staying in the village and people from other regions cannot access to the village, then overall the village becomes unsustainable in the long run. Therefore, our suggestion is to build a public space for community functions. This public area will make it easier for Pokfulam villagers to promote their unique Chinese festivals and cultures in other communities while at the same time enabling visitors from surrounding regions and tourists to access the village more conveniently. Of course, there are more opportunities to encourage interactions. The public space will also make life in general easier for the inhabitants of Pokfulam and become new attractions for tourists. For example, we can use this space for building a new market, community centre, school, farming activities, festival events and so on. Improved accessibility, a better information flow, and more exposure to the cultural activities offered in Pokfulam will make an important contribution to preserving and promoting the local culture and environments. In summary, Pokfulam village is not burned by real fire. We use a metaphor to express the combination of fire dragon festival and new blood.
