How can we visualise and\u00a0understand, on a human scale, this vast\u00a0and intense amount of urbanisation\u00a0and consumption taking place? One\u00a0artist and photographer, Chris Jordan,\u00a0takes on this challenge through his\u00a0work in a series titled: Running the\u00a0Numbers, which looks at contemporary\u00a0American culture through the lens of\u00a0the statistic. His work tries to convey\u00a0the scale at which mass-consumption\u00a0is taking place. His piece, Plastic\u00a0Bags (2007) visualizes on a canvas\u00a060\u201dx72\u201d 60,000 plastic bags, the\u00a0amount used every 5 seconds in the\u00a0USA. Through this visualization of\u00a0quantities of consumption, it becomes\u00a0clear that the sheer volume of material\u00a0flows is nearly incomprehensible and\u00a0difficult to connect with from the\u00a0perspective of the individual.
