President Report

The University of Hong Kong Surveying Alumni Association 2007-2009

Dear fellow members,

This is the third report of The University of Hong Kong Surveying Alumni Association (the Surveying Alumni). I would like to take this opportunity to report to you briefly the activities organized and to be organized by the Surveying Alumni Association.

Establishment of the Surveying Alumni Association

Since the formation of the Surveying Alumni Association in 2001 and the first annual dinner and general meeting held at Loke Yew Hall in August 2002, the Association is now 8 years old and we have more than 1,271 members on record.

Since 2007, the Association is run by alumni themselves and is independent of the Department, and the two organizations are cooperating closely.

Activities of the Surveying Alumni Association

We have launched a number of events in the period 2007-2009, including:

1. Annual Dinner and EGM

We organized two annual dinners and EGMs on 19th March 2007 and 7th April 2008. They were successfully held in Loke Yew Hall with more than 100 guests and graduates present every year. The annual dinner tonight is to celebrate the 30th Anniversary since the first cohort graduated in 1979.

The current Board of Directors are :

(i) President : Mr. Cheung Tat Tong
(ii) Vice President : Dr. Chan Man Wai
(iii) Secretary : Dr. WONG Siu-kei, Kelvin
(iv) Treasurer : Dr. YIU Chung-yim, Edward
(v) Directors : Mr. CHUNG Wai-kit, Stephen
Prof. HUI Chi-man, Eddie
Mr. LAI Chiu-cheong, Frederick
Mr. LEE Fook-pui, Billy
Mr. SUEN Mau-hing

The Directors met on :

a. 20 Dec 2007 lunch at Senior Common Room, HKU, and

b. 9 Dec 2008 dinner at HKU AA Club, Central.

2. Mentorship Scheme

The mentorship scheme was successfully launched on 18 January 2005 which had bridged a strong link between our (year 2) students and our graduates. Thanks to our graduates’ participation, we had more than 30 mentor-mentee pairs each year, and the number is growing rapidly. This year (2008/09), we introduced firstly the mentorship scheme to year 1 students as well, and reinforced the group-and-pair system. There are 57 mentees (19 year-1 and 38 year-2), 32 mentors, forming 15 groups and 57 pairs.

3. Academic Prize

In 2007-2009, three Surveying Alumni Prizes for final year undergraduate students in the Department of Building and Real Estate, the University of Hong Kong were granted to three students who had the best result in dissertation in that year. The names of the students are as follows:

2006-2007 Mr. Kwong Wai Yin and Miss Li Kit Yu
2007-2008 Mr. Yeung Shun Shing

4. Strengthening of contacts

In order to strengthen our contact with the alumni, we plan to appoint 2 representatives from every 3 years’ cohort and trust that would facilitate a better communication between us.

5. Other assignments on the pipeline

We are planning to publish a Directory of Alumni. The successful publication would require your support in due course.

We also study the possibility of introducing a quality on-the-job training mentoring scheme, the “Surdowing” which model from the pupilage scheme of other professions.

Financial Status

At present, with your support, the Surveying Alumni Association is enjoying a modest but healthy financial status of low 5-digit balance.

A recap of the past 30 years

My grateful thanks to Peter Dy (1995) and Edward Yiu (1998) and many alumni who took the pain of digging out the old photos from their stores to enable to prepare a memorable photo show for tonight. We will upload the photos in our website afterward.

The 30 years’ Change

It is also interested to see the changes in the name of the department and the degrees offered over the years. In 1795 we admitted the fist batch of Building student in the School of Architecture and the first cohort graduated with degrees in 1978 (BA(Architectural Studies)) and in 1979 (B.Building).

1982 – 1984 – B.Sc. (Building Studies)(3 years program)+ B. Building (4th year)
1985 – 1990 – B.Sc. (Quantity Surveying)(4 years program)
1991 – Now – B.Sc. (Surveying)(3 years program)

Changes in department name

1975 – June 1984 (School of Architecture)
June 1984 – 1986 (Department of Building)
1986 – 1997 (Department of Surveying)
1997 – now (Department of Real Estate and Construction)

Looking forward

It is my honour to be the President of the Surveying Alumni Association and I am sure that with the support of the industry and the alumni and proper resources allocated to the Department from the Faculty, we are able to carry out future activities of the Surveying Alumni for our graduates and students. I am looking forward to the continued support from all of you in the years to come.
