The Master of Science in Real Estate is designed to provide an advanced education in all major aspects of the land conversion process affecting decisions related to real estate in both the private and public sectors. Consequently it covers issues related to land policy as well as investment, finance and management and is orientated particularly towards Hong Kong and China as well as the various investment and development opportunities in the rest of the Asia Pacific Region. The program helps students to broaden and deepen their knowledge and to apply their skills in solving complex problems associated with real estate development and investment.

The duration of this program is normally 12 months in full-time mode and 24 months in part-time mode. This unique international MSc program in real estate and construction has been professionally recognized by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). Successful graduates from this MSc program can, upon satisfying other work requirements, apply to sit for the Assessment of Professional Competence and become professional chartered surveyors. This professional qualification is recognized as one of the leading qualifications in real estate and construction in most parts of the world, including Europe, Australia, North America, and certain Asian countries.

The program comprises of prescribed courses and elective courses. The prescribed courses are economics for professionals, management theory and construction projects, law for the real estate and construction industry, research methods and project workshop. The electives allow students to concentrate on specific aspects of the subject such as real estate investment and finance, planning and building development, facility management practice, etc. In addition, students may select to prepare a substantial dissertation on a topic of their choice. Successful completion of all prescribed courses and elective courses qualifies a candidate for the award of MSc in Real Estate (RE).

Since September 2001, the Department has started offering MSc (RE) program with different majors. The MSc(RE) majors are Facility Management, Planning and Development, Real Estate Investment and Finance and General Practice Surveying. Majors in General Practice Surveying (GPS), Facility Management, and Planning and Development are accredited by the Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors (HKIS), which lead to professional qualifications in the General Practice Surveying, Facility Management, and Planning and Development Divisions of the HKIS, respectively. If a candidate wishes to pursue one of the ‘majors’ in this MSc program, one of the prescribed groups of elective courses must be selected.

Learning Outcomes

After completion of the program, graduates will be able to:

  1. Communicate effectively with other related professionals in the real estate and construction industries;
  2. Apply relevant theory to practice as it applies to real estate development and investment to suit different organizational and regional contexts;
  3. Integrate relevant knowledge in real estate development and investment with other disciplines in order to enhance professional practice skills;
  4. Apply critical thinking, analytical as well as research skills to investigate issues within the real estate industry in a local, regional and global context;
  5. Implement effective development and investment strategies to real estate and construction projects.
