Adapting Structure

Why

The adaption of the drive-through’s for the car invited innovative usage of different structures and tectonic surfaces and made new spatial experiences in the physical realm and also virtual representations of boundaries from circulation and temporary rules. By looking at these transitional spaces, crowded at one point and empty the next, most transitional, circulatory, event led developments are built as temporary structures rather than permanent structures while larger developments would involved adaptive usage and spatial reorganization for different programs. The unplanned results from the setup of events and circulatory needs and there lies the issue in integrating structures with living and social needs, while a part of the boundary it makes itself into a part of the visual culture. Below the same structure of Crolla’s pavilion for the Hong Kong august moon event is reused in the following year’s program into a different configuration can also be transformed for other usages.

What

As new areas are built up around railways, roads, infrastructure, permanent structures are placed due to unchanging and strategic positioning for transportation, a center is developed in Hengqin New Area for integrated services, cultural and creative zones, Hong Kong Airport island at the points for the Hong Kong-Macau-Zhuhai bridge and at the crossborders of Shenzhen, there are urban implications on development boundaries, it can be seen that migration into the city and immediate settlements tended towards accessibility, necessity, affordability and convention in Hong Kong. This thesis will be an investigation into an architecture for inhabiting and using these kinds of spaces, its organization, scheduling of events and structures at boundaries, gateways and infrastructure to make the inaccessible accessible, uninhabitable livable.

How

The spatial organisation will be studied from two or more areas and the formulation of rules for program scheduling, massing, dwelling, environment, livability is to be investigated from the structures, urban patterns, program and other conditions. Habitation, urbanization, event and emerging gateways are investigated as experiments alongside design and material possibilities to design interchangeable dwellings, services and infrastructure where different structures for events, bridge, transport, infrastructure provides alternative urban, community and social conditions.
