SUMMARY:Conference on Institutions\, Institutional Analysis\, and China’s Economic Transformation
DESCRIPTION:Jointly Organized by\nRonald Coase Centre for Property Rights Research\nThe University of Hong Kong\nAnd\nRonald Coase Center for the Study of the Economy\nZhejiang University \nChina’s economic transformation presents a striking dilemma for new institutional economics. On the one hand\, the extraordinary growth record China has achieved ever since the start of economic reform and opening-up in the late 1970s has provided strongest possible testimony to institutions as a fundamental cause of economic growth and economic change. On the other hand\, the economic rise of China has been accompanied by notoriously weak institutions\, from property rights protection to contract enforcement\, from the financial system to the rule of law. At this mini-conference\, scholars from North America\, Japan\, Mainland China\, Taiwan and Hong Kong will present original research papers to explore the institutional foundations of China’s market transformation. Papers will be divided into four groups\, namely the political economy of China’s market transformation\, the slowing down economy\, the industrial structure of production\, and the institutions of land and urbanization. \nProgramme Rundown\n9:00 – 09:15 Introduction and Welcome\nKW CHAU\, Ronald Coase Centre for Property Rights Research\, The University of Hong Kong \n\n9:15 – 10:30 First session: The political economy of China’s market transformation\nSay GOO\, Department of Law and Ronald Coase Centre for Property Rights Research\, The University of Hong Kong: Chair \nJames DORN\, Cato Institute: China’s challenge: Expanding the market\, limiting the state \nNing WANG\, Ronald Coase Institute and Ronald Coase Center for the Study of the Economy at Zhejiang University: China’s market transformation and classical liberalism \n\n10:30 – 11:00 Tea break\n\n11:00 – 12:30 Second session: The slowing down economy\nLee BENHAM\, Ronald Coase Institute: Chair \nChenggang XU\, School of Economics and Finance and Ronald Coase Centre for Property Rights Research\,\, The University of Hong Kong: Old problem with new syndrome: China’s slowing down and instability \n\n12:30 – 2:00 Intermission\n\n2:00 – 3:30 Third session: The industrial structure of production\nKC WONG\, Ronald Coase Centre for Property Rights Research\, The University of Hong Kong: Chair \nMariko WATANABE\, Department of Management\, Gakushuin University: Identifying competition neutrality of SOEs in China \nDING Ke\, Institute of Developing Economies\, Japan External Trade Organization: The role of personal exchange in China’s market transformation: a case study of Wenzhou merchants \nCHU Chih-Ning\, Department of Business Administration\, Chung Yuan Christian University: The Third Law of Demand: An Empirical Test \n\n3:30 – 4:00 Tea break\n\n4:00 – 5:30 Fourth session: Institutions of land and urbanization\nChris WEBSTER\, HKUrban Lab and Ronald Coase Centre for Property Rights Research\, The University of Hong Kong: Chair \nGeng XIAO\, Fung Global Institute: China’s evolving growth model: The Foshan Story \nLU Qian\, School of Economics\, Central University of Finance and Economics: Contractual City \nKW Chau\, Ronald Coase Centre for Property Rights Research\, The University of Hong Kong: A property rights analysis of subsidized homeownership: problems and solutions \n\n5:30 – 5:40 Closing\nChris WEBSTER\, HKUrban Lab and Ronald Coase Centre for Property Rights Research\, The University of Hong Kong \n\n\nHosted By\n	\n \n \n \n \n\n\n#image_1109534844 {\n width: 100%;\n}\n\n	\n	\nSupported by:\n	\n \n \n \n \n\n\n#image_2056658489 {\n width: 100%;\n}\n\n	\n	\n
