Dr Xi Deng is a Research Fellow in the Department of Urban Planning and Design at the University of Hong Kong. Before joining HKU, he had taught design studios for BA and MA students as a Faculty Lecturer (now Assistant Professor) at Harbin Institute of Technology, where he also worked as the Assistant Chair of the Department of Architecture. During his doctoral and postdoctoral research at Cardiff University, he was supervised by Professor Philip John Jones OBE, a British expert in architectural science with a global honourable reputation. Dr Deng holds an MSc degree in Building Engineering/Architecture from Politecnico di Milano and a BEng degree in Civil Engineering from Chongqing University. Dr Deng is an architect and engineer with rich experience in interdisciplinary research and engineering practice in the construction industry. He is a member of the China Architectural Society (SN: e420038684m) and a qualified engineer by the China National First Class Registered Structural Engineer (SN: 12031513) (the Top Level, 1st Half).

Dr Deng is currently working on an RGC Theme-Based Research Scheme Project- ‘Healthy and Resilient City with Pervasive LoCHs’, based in the Sustainable High Density Cities Lab and supervised by Professor Jianxiang Huang. Dr Deng’s research interests and expertise are diverse and impactful. His focus areas include Environmental Design, Urban Regeneration, and Smart Buildings, addressing issues in Climate Resilience at multiple scales, Public Health in the built environments, Integration of Art and Technology in designs, and engagement & collaboration in urban communities. His contributions to these fields have been recognized internationally, as evidenced by invitations from Editors to review for prestigious international journals such as Building and Environment, Sustainable Cities and Society, Indoor Air, and Intelligent Buildings International.
