Abstract:
Intercity transport connectivity is crucial for regional economic development. While many studies have examined intercity highway planning at multiple geographical levels and explored the relationship between highway development and regional economy, few studies have looked into planned but unimplemented segments on highways, i.e., broken links (Duantoulu). Taking a mixed-method approach, this research will examine broken links on the Chinese National Highway (Guodao). More specifically, the proposed study will answer three major sets of questions: First, what is the spatial pattern of broken links on the Chinese National Highway? Second, why certain highway projects failed to be realized, and what are the underlying socioeconomic, environmental, institutional, and political dynamics? Third, how broken highway links affect individual cities differently and contribute to regional economic (in)equality?
About the Speaker:
Fang Bian is a PhD student in the Department of Urban Planning and Design at the University of Hong Kong. He graduated from College of Urban and Environmental Sciences at Peking University with a master’s degree of science in city and regional planning. Fang Bian has previously obtained his bachelor’s degree in urban planning in Xi’an University of Architecture and Technology. In addition, his research interests are urban morphology, built environment and regional studies in contemporary China.
