Abstract:
The profound impact of global urban experiments taking place today demands new ways of theorizing. Professor Hsing proposes to go beyond the dichotomy of the state and market when it comes to the driver of urbanization. She argues that urbanization is not being “led” by either force. Instead, urban processes play an active and decisive role in state building and market formation. While this argument is drawn from her empirical research in China in the last two decades, similar dynamics could be found in many other places and times.
