Abstract:
British provincial cities, especially in northern England, have experienced a roller coaster of an economic performance over the last half century. Eventually they ‘reinvented’ themselves as high level services centres in their own right and are seen as engines of regional growth. Nevertheless they remain the loci of concentrations of unemployment and low incomes. Despite the revival of provincial cities, economic growth in London and the south-east continues to outpace the north. The UK government has been promoting the concept of a northern powerhouse – a collection of close-knit cities as a team to take on the world. While transforming the interconnectivities among northern cities is a vital component for spatial rebalancing, the gravity and spatially diverse problems in many provincial cities remain an imperative for strategic thinking.
