Research Seminar

Topic:
Activating Urban Vibrancy: A Validation of Urban Form with Big Data

Speaker:
Prof. Yan Song

Professor, Department of City and Regional Planning
Director, Program on Chinese Cities
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Schedule:
Date: 20 December 2016 (Tuesday)
Time: 13:00-14:30
Venue: Room 820, 8/F, Knowles Building, HKU

Abstract:
In this presentation, I first discuss a range of classical measures of urban vibrancy and how these metrics are used to describe both residential and commercial places. I also reveal how these vibrant features measured by traditional metrics are valued in both residential and commercial real estate markets. More interestingly, I then employ big data to construct new measures of urban vibrancy and validate the traditional measures with data from social networking. Both traditional and state-of-the-art measures of vibrancy measures are compared and tested for the economic values of vibrancy in real estate markets. Astounding consistency is identified between two sets of measures and this uniformity has pronounced implications for place-making implements.

About the Speaker:
Professor Yan Song directs the Program on Chinese Cities (PCC), a new initiative within DCRP and the Center for Urban & Regional Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her research interests includes low carbon and green cities, plan evaluation, land use development and regulations, spatial analysis of urban spatial structure and urban form, land use and transportation integration, and how to accommodate research in above fields by using planning supporting systems such as GIS and usage of big data. PCC conducts research and training aimed at better understanding the impacts of rapid urban growth on China’s built and natural environments and explores ways to make this process more equitable, transparent, and socially and ecologically sustainable. Dr. Song’s research projects have been supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and Lincoln Institute of Land Policy.
