Abstract:
Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is one of the most detrimental air pollutants to human health. There is increasing evidence that PM2.5 is associated with population mortality, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, and even mental health, such as anxiety and suicide. China, which has the world’s largest economy and is one of the most populated countries, is now suffering from severe PM2.5 pollution. This is particularly true in region encompassing the capital Beijing and its surrounding cities.
My focus in this seminar is to understand the patterns and regional transport of PM2.5 pollution in Beijing and its surrounding cities, and to propose a zoning framework to help inform the pollution mitigation policies and measures in China.
In this seminar I will present three individual but connected studies.
- How does PM2.5 concentration in Beijing vary by time?
- Is regional transport of PM2.5 significant and should Beijing blame other cities for emitting pollution?
- What are the exact boundaries of area responsible for the PM2.5 pollution in Beijing and is there any decision-support tool to determine the area within which policies should be enforced?
In these studies, I use advanced computational methods – including time-series clustering, cross-correlation method, and geographical information science tools – as well as innovative visualization techniques to explore the temporal patterns and regional transport of PM2.5 pollution. The research results from the three studies advance current understanding of PM2.5 pollution in China and offer different perspectives. The research findings have significant policy, social and research implications.
