Land Supply and Brownfields Utilization in Hong Kong

Speaker:
Ms. Camille Lam
Local Research Community

Schedule:
Date: 13 November, 2013 (Wednesday)
Time: 12:45 – 2:00 pm
Venue: Room 829, 8/F Knowles Building, HKU

Abstract:
In Hong Kong, it has become a “common belief” that limited land supply is the rooted cause of the majority of social issues, including housing supply, living quality of local residents, economic development, etc.. The talk will bring about discussion of the realities and political issues of land development in Hong Kong. The second part of the talk will introduce the ongoing research of LRC related to brownfields redevelopment which is getting more attention than ever worldwide as part of the push for sustainable development –however, is still a pre-mature idea in local town planning. The talk will introduce the overseas policy framework and make comparisons with the situation in Hong Kong.

About the Speaker:
Camille Lam is a member of Local Research Community (LRC), a local advocate on land development and public policy. Camille is also a graduate from the Department of Urban Planning and Design (DUPAD) of HKU, and is now an Assistant Town Planner in a local consultancy firm. LRC published two books related to land development and housing issues in 2013 (the two books titled «不是土地供應—香港土地問題的迷思與真象» and «住屋不是地產民間長遠房屋策略研究報告»). Two previous studies titled “Research on New Territories Crop Compensation Policy” and “Response to Urban Renewal Strategy Review” were published in 2010.
