Up to 40% of global carbon emissions come from the construction industry – meaning changing how we build could help us win the climate fight.
HKU Architecture Chair Professor (Digital Construction) Wilson Lu, one of the world’s leading experts on construction waste management, is combining lab-based big data with real-world collaboration to help Hong Kong builders cut waste and embrace hashtagsustainability.
Professor Lu is also transforming how Hong Kong builds. As the city embraces modular integrated construction (MiC) – where modules are built in factories, then shipped and assembled on-site – his team at HKU’s iLab is developing digital tools, including blockchain-based tools, to track and authenticate materials and help developers ensure the safety of modules manufactured outside Hong Kong.
Known as the “MiC Trio,” the tools cover:
🏭 Manufacturing
🚛 Logistics
🏢 Installation
“There’s a lot of pessimism about the future of the industry right now,” says Professor Lu. “But we need to stay confident and embrace new technologies like AI. That’s how we’ll revive the profession and elevate it to new heights.”
