Thesis Statement:

The thesis proposal is trying to explore the possibility of architecture to mediate between ‘modern democracy’ and ‘capitalist.’

What?

Plugging in 10m x 10m grid in the public spaces of Hong Kong such as in Statue Square, Central Ferry Pier, ground floor of the HSBC Building, Chater Garden, etc in Central.  These 10m x10m grids have different programmes that represents what Hong Kong is and a symbol of ‘democracy’ for people. They are MONO functionality, materiality, monumentality and rationality. However, it is MULTI-spatiality, target-user, valuability. Mono lends attribute of impartiality (object stance) and persistence (embroil controversy). It deals on that the grid is today. The super idea of equality or democracy today in Hong Kong. Each grid measures 10m x 10m. The ideal of these equal grid is to have a mono condition with total different spatial possibilities in terms of experience to the city. I am trying to build the experience for the people in the city rather than a building.

How?

Analysing the site condition of its geopolitical significants. These include the area studies, climate, topography, demography and the natural resources available. By breaking these aspects into data, one can start to understand the different values of each piece of grid. Therefore, we can start to plug in the grid into different locations depending on the programme and its value to the land values.

Why?

We live in an unequal society. I want to show what ‘real’ modern democracy is in terms of architecture. Also, make people see and understand that might happen in the future in this so-called ‘democracy’ if we don’t start to act and fight for ‘real modern democracy.’
