The Existence “Void” Space

Form is not keeping its focus status. Personally, form is as a tool of expression of space. This space experience is more associated with mentally impermanence that cultural aesthetic and artistic conception rather than finality.  Steven Holl stated in his book “Parallax”: A space can be filled with the desire to “represent”. We start to imagine the mystery of place and memory the defined space feelings and stories).

The triangle relationship of my research focuses on not “Space, Form, Function”, replaced by “Void, Ambiguous, Existence”.

In order to test how to define ambiguous void space as a medium express the existence regional cultural and traditional ideology. I will further investigate the projects chose by the following aspects as speaking:

i: Existence void space defined by culture ideology. The related project is the Roman Pantheon and the Classical Garden of Suzhou. Both of them highly present a tradition void space in western and oriental culture.
ii: Ambiguous void space established by Light as a Medium; The research focus on Steven Holl and Tadao Ando.
iii: Ambiguous space formulated through adaptable facade and weakness of architecture by Jean Nouve and Fujimoto.

–Why?

Enthusiasm habitual actions are kept in objectifying and quantifying to analyze and definite space , from the function of it, the size of it, the volume of it, extended to direction, quality, relationship of space. While, I am extremely interested the opposite, the non-objectification space that was described in Gaston Bachelard`s book, ”The Poetics of Space” , is  consciousness, the conceptualization of space. In my opinion, the fascinating of space is its existence can be perceived, imaged and as a manifestations of place spirit.

Further, this existing void space is not by fiction but abstracted from similarity of phenomenon that is result in tradition culture. It relies on a stable perception system form image and place.

Based on analysis of the regional cultural spirit and connotation ,as well as void space as a medium of this mind and place, my thesis targets to poetic understanding and testing a expression of the relationship between of ambiguous void space and spacial poetic conception with vernacular environment, culture and traditional ideology, in the aspect of the phenomenology.

-How?
The Methodological Processes diagram of my thesis  is the following two lines :
i.Culture—Regional Aesthetic and Poetic Conception— People—Existence—Space—Void — Ambiguous
ii. Ambiguous—Void —Space

Based on selected condition, I should start in cultural research to embody abstract regional aesthetic space and poetic conception, then trace memory and event of human to find the targeted “existence” of space in urban or architecture. On other side, form, transparency, material and construction, all performed as tool to transit ambiguous figure to void of space. The outcome will be the confliction of spiritual and existence “void” space, crossing time to display stories of memory powerfully.
