2022 Young Scholar Research Forum – Innovative Design and Construction Technologies

Brief of the Session

The global architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry is undergoing digital transformation with emerging technologies innovations. In this forum, CIB-HKU Student Chapter invites two extraordinary young scholars to share their latest research, and discuss the applicability of innovative construction technologies in real-world implementations. Dr. Junjie CHEN will introduce the framework and key technologies to integrate Smart Movable Platforms with existing inspection pipeline for building and infrastructure. Dr. Mun On WONG will exemplify how BIM, hybrid positioning techniques, and multi-user networking environments can be used to assist participants in dynamic route planning, indoor location tracking and real-time information sharing in indoor fire emergency.

“Diagnosing the Concrete Jungle”: Building and Infrastructure Inspection using Smart Movable Platforms

Abstract
Concrete structures such as buildings and infrastructure play an important role in sustaining the well-being of society. However, efficient inspection of this massive concrete jungle, so as to pinpoint defects for proactive maintenance, remains an unsolved challenge. The advent of smart movable platforms (SMPs), e.g., drones and ground robots, provides unprecedented tools to tackle the challenge. In this talk, the speaker will share his ongoing research on SMPs for building and infrastructure inspection. It will start with an overarching framework to integrate SMPs with existing inspection pipeline. Key technologies involved in the framework will be delineated, which include robot positioning and navigation, human-in-the-loop inspection by augmented reality, semantic-aware defect perception, and defect 3D reconstruction and modeling. Effectiveness of the technologies has been validated with first-hand data collected from multiple case studies. The speaker will conclude by giving an outlook to exciting future directions of the study.

Bio

Dr. Junjie Chen is a post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Real Estate and Construction at HKU. He obtained his PhD in hydraulic engineering from Tianjin University. His research areas include BIM, Computer Vision, robotics, Digital Twin, and smart facility management.

Dr. Mun On WONG, Post-doctoral Fellow in the Department of Civil Engineering at The University of Hong Kong

Emerging technologies for collaborative fire emergency response

Abstract

Indoor fire emergency is one of the most dangerous incidents that cause casualties and property damage. Various information (e.g., evacuation routes, firefighting system properties, trapped locations) is desired by different emergency participants but rarely available in practice, making the response operations solitary and inefficient. Emerging technologies, such as BIM, hybrid positioning techniques, and multi-user networking environments have huge potential to assist participants in dynamic route planning, indoor location tracking, emergency information provision, and real-time information sharing. In this talk, the speaker will introduce their utilization for fire emergencies and present a system that integrated these technologies to open up new possibilities for response collaboration. A real-life case study and a system evaluation will be shared to clarify the breakthroughs, limitations, and future work.

Bio

Dr. Mun On WONG is a Post-doctoral Fellow in the Department of Civil Engineering at The University of Hong Kong. Before that, he received his Ph.D. degree from HKU in 2021. His research interests include building informatics, indoor emergency navigation, and multi-user virtual prototyping with extended reality.
