Brief of the Session
This time CIBHKU tries to bridge the Department of Real Estate and Construction as well as the Department of Urban Planning and Design through the popular and hot topic of advanced built environment technology. We invited both excellent young assistant professors from PSU and HKU to give a sharp and latest research sharing to our RPG students after the Christmas. It is known that many our Rpg students have a common language in this field and hope most of you can be inspired a lot in this research event. Welcome to learn after a relaxed holiday!

Introduction
Lecturer 1: Dr. Yuqing Hu, Assistant professor in the Architectural Engineering Department at Penn State University
Title: The Integration of BIM and Graph Thinking: Design coordination improvement from a holistic perspective
Abstract:
The architecture, engineering and construction industry is experiencing a digital transformation, and many advanced technologies are being used, such as 3D printing and robotics. These technologies improve the automation level of construction projects, while placing higher requirements on the quality of design. A fully coordinated design that integrates construction and operation knowledge is a prerequisite for construction automation. This presentation examines the use of artificial intelligence and graph theory to improve design constructability by optimizing BIM-enabled clash detection and resolution. Building on this study, this presentation provides a framework to use BIM as a central database to create an intelligent coordination platform. This platform aims to proactively and continuously check inconsistencies of constraints (from design, construction, and operation teams) to avoid coordination issues and prevent unexpected accidents or changes from propagating based on spatial and temporal dependency relations among building components and among activities.
About the lecturer:
Yuqing Hu is an assistant professor in the Architectural Engineering Department at Penn State University (PSU). Her research focuses on BIM and AI-based interdependent system coordination in the built environment. Dr. Hu’s research also includes human-technology interactions from a socio-technical system perspective. Dr. Hu earned her Ph.D. degree in Building Construction and a master’s degree in Computational Science & Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology in 2020. Before joining Georgia Tech, she received her master’s and bachelor’s degrees in Management Science & Engineering from Tongji University, Shanghai, China in 2016 and 2013.
Lecturer 2: Dr. Jianxiang Huang, Assistant professor in the Department of Urban Planning and Design at The University of Hong Kong
Title: Sustainable High Density Cities: Linking Research to Practice
Abstract
Emerging urban data analytics and simulation tools provide new opportunities. The sustainable high density cities lab has developed a number of digital tools to assess urban heat island effect, building energy use, pollutant concentration, and airborne transmission of disease. Some of these tools have been applied in real-world design and planning practices.
About the lecturer:
Jianxiang Huang is an assistant professor in the Department of Urban Planning and Design at the University of Hong Kong (HKU). His research focus on the thermal, acoustic and building energy performances in high density cities. He developed computerized tools to assess and optimize urban environmental performances. At HKU, he directs the Sustainable High Density Cities Lab and he teaches theory and design studio courses in the urban design curriculum.
