Theme

Fire and wind
Fire and wind are the most basic elements of Earth. They embody the flow of invisible energies, and visualize the fluidity of form. Fire most dramatically expresses the origin of cosmic energy originated from the sun and the stars, the deepest source of all life. But the wildness fire needs to be contained. The ability to control fire is the beginning of civilization. The dynamic expressions of light and shadow and wind are always transient and can only be poetically described. To acutely observe their constantly varying forms is to capture the essence of the present. To be completely absorbed into the presence of the positivity and negativity of light and shadows, solids and voids, directs us to the phenomenological experience our existence, the intangible experience of the passage of time. Transience, the very essence of any time-based art, can only be partially captured through the subjective lens of the archiver. Remnants of burn – ashes – and the void created by the vanished object are the only traces of work. The most dramatic, and yet the most subdued.

Concept

The twin cubes
The twin cubes were placed separately at two sites with totally different contexts: one with sand covering the surface, and three historical remaining walls surrounding, being protected from the strong wind; the other with red rocks and boulders, fierce wind passing by, and the upcoming tide. The fire in the two cubes visualizes the essence of the different contexts. The different burning outcomes of the fire visualize different contexts of the sites. Fire and wind are in a two-way relationship. Fire visualizes wind, and wind exerts influences on fire as well. Wind aids fire to burn and grow, while at the same time, it has the destructive power to put the fire out. In modern times, human technology advances more rapidly than we have ever imagined, which consequently has led to our growing self-confidence and vanishing respect for nature. Twin Cubes is intended to recall people’s awareness of the great power of nature by highlighting the destruction process of the cube at seaside.
