THESIS STATEMENT
In the present period of time, we are now hasty moving in dense and hectic
urban , with rare nature landscape and few sky view, unbalence city life and dark
living environment resulted in many urban emotional illness, focusing on many
developed city as hong kong which is the typical case with dense high-rise, we
can always nd that the limit sky view when we look up, which as an interesting
urban situation of natural light and building impacting the visual feeling of
human.
Although Light can not directly impact our feeling and emotions when we fully
own it, I would still agree that light can change the phenomenon of space when
it going limited , which will change our visual feeling and then affect our emotion
feeling. This thesis is to exploring and rethinking the natural light in dark gap
of dense city, see how to recreate the phenomenon of the dark gap by different
building shaping. different facade form,color and material also can help changing
the situation and human visual sense.

Urban situation and life in Dense City
Dense high-rises, narrow pavement, noisy crowd and busy traffic, all of these
pictures will be showed in front of me when I think of many downtown city such
as Hong Kong. As an international financial city, Hong Kong attracting too much
tourists from mainland China and Western Country, which made this small island
seems more crowd. And on the other hand, there are numbers of hong kong
families living in tiny space or small low-cost housing.
When facing this kind of city situation, various urban issue appearing nowadays,
for example, hong kong have not much open space for people’s social life
among residential district, tiny eating space and roadside become the only place
they chatting. And also, because of small living space many people tend to go to
some indoor public space such as shopping mall instead of stay at home or
walking on the street.
We can image that when people walking on the street, numbers of high-rises
stay closely to each other not only decrease the outdoor social space, which also
block the sky view and natural light of the street. Living in density, people have
diffrent emotional expression, even some of them got urban emotional illness,
which is an important urban issue we have to face in this modern city.
What?
Le Corbusier said “Space and light and order. Those are the things that men need
just as much as they need bread or a place to sleep. ”
Thus, bright public space which is really needed in this density urban to make feel
free and relax. Martin Lupton who is an environment engineer and lighting
designer considered that sunlight is the most emotionally charged type of light.
Sunlight represent happiness. What I want to do is bringing such happiness to
this dense city, create a public space of nature by using natural light. Because sky
view and natural light always represents the values as rest, calm and freedom,
which has a huge impact on the space.
Research Processes
1, Urban Gap Research. Looking for the left over space in dense high-rise district in
Hong Kong.
2, Light reflection and Natural Light Collection study.
3, Reach about the light and human emotion, see how diffrent color light control
the feeling of people.
4, Study of the relationship of Light Reflection and Space, testing the space by
using diffrent reflecting method.
5, Thinking of the relationship of the public space and the existing buildings and
streets.
6, Though some case study, exploring the light and space, testing lighting reflection. As From the Glasgow School of Art Redevelopment by Steven Holl, from which I can see how to use sky light window and different form shaping to lighting an indoor space. And as some japan cases, reflecting natural light is good using in narrow space and ting architecture.
