There is the absolute reality as described by Plato as out of this material world. Hegel also insists that what is rational is real. We live in the present materialised world as well as an idealised conceptual world.
We as humans live in the materialised world as well as the world of our imagination and memory.
This thesis aim to explore how we react and dwell in a place; and how our imagination and memory dwell in a place through the way we get to know and remember a place/ sense of place.
This thesis is going to explore how this can be translated into architectural experience where people can be emotionally bounded to.
The approach is to identify the genius loci of the place and enhance and extend that atmosphere into the imagination realm so that the architecture can create a certain sphere that house the occupants physically as well as their imaginative world consisting of memories. Architecture achieves its essence by creating places and connecting their spaces.
The outcome is a place that requires something from the occupants that offers a large variation in possibilities for identification.
I would like to test this thesis out in Xinjiang with a trading center where there is a strong and diverse cultural background and history of trading.

Preconception
According to Heidegger, we cannot claim to obtain a disinterested, presupposition-less view of things; our understanding of things always already predetermined by our prior understanding.
We orient around our environment with our prior knowledge that we gained through our experience in this world. We have gained a set of knowledge about architectural elements e.g. windows, doorway corridor etc.
This thesis aim to play with those elements and use them in unexpected way to provoke and create interesting events that will take place.
What if a window double up as a door; what if a doorway becomes an extended corridor?
The architecture will challenge the occupants to rethink about the space we dwell in and provoke them to think about things that we always take for granted.
