– Japanese Zen-Garden
Wall is a vertical structure that physically define space. It acts as a boundary which constraints the experience of human. The Ryōan-ji in Japan has one of the most famous Zen garden. the corridor that connecting the meditation space of the rock garden and outside acts as an extremely crucial role for transiting individuals’mind. In stead of wall, corridor can articulate two spaces and at the same time maintaining separation between them.

– Continuity of space
“The outside is not a fixed limit but a moving matter animated by peristaltic movements, folds and foldings that together make up an inside: they are not something other than the outside, but precisely the inside of the outside.” Deleuze – Foucault p.96-97
Architecture nowadays is usually defined as buildings and other physical structure(eg. wall) that creating space. When there are two extreme conditions, architecture acts as a boundary that provides immediate transition between them. Take a typical house as example; architecture is an enclosure that immediately changes the spatial quality. This deprives human of the sense of continuity of space. Space becomes fragmented, resulting in the form of a broken narrative. Individuals hurdle from one space to another without a dialog of how the journey between taking place.

The thesis tries to create a fluid contiguous sense of space by architecture. Transition between incoherent spaces plays a crucial role. It can be created by gradually physical, tactile, and corporeal experiences rather than strictly visual ones.
“Space, as frequentation of places rather than a place, stems in effect from a double movement: the traveler’s movement, of course, but also a parallel movement of the landscapes which he catches only in partial glimpses, a series of ‘snapshots’ piled hurriedly into his memory and, literally, recomposed in the account he gives of them, the sequencing of slides in the commentary he imposes on his entourage when he returns.”

On the other hand, as an interface between two space, architecture is a filter that controlling how the spatial qualities inherent with each other. Different elements like light, water and views are filtrated from in to out and vice versa. Hence, distinct spatial quality can be created although using same media.

Wall, regarded as a repelling as gate in a city. This thesis tries to question the possibility of redefining the perception of “walls”.
