At the recent Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors (HKIS) Building Surveying Division annual dinner, Chair Professor Wilson Lu, our Head of Department, was awarded the Honorary Fellowship of the HKIS, effective from December 2025.
The Honorary Fellowship is HKIS most prestigious grade of membership, conferred on distinguished individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the surveying profession or the Institute. It is often awarded to non-members or industry leaders and represents the highest form of honorary recognition within HKIS.
In his acceptance speech, Prof. Lu expressed deep honour and humility in receiving the fellowship. Quoting Isaac Newton, he reflected that any achievements he has made were by “standing on the shoulders of giants” in the profession, including Prof. K.W. Chau, Prof. Bay Wong, Mr. Ir. Robin Leung, Prof. Daniel Ho, and many others who have served as HKIS Presidents or held leadership roles.
Prof. Lu also spoke about the opportunities and challenges facing the surveying profession, particularly Building Surveying, in the era of Artificial Intelligence (AI). He pledged to further enhance collaboration between academia and industry through undergraduate and postgraduate education, as well as research. The Department has consistently supplied skilled professionals to the industry, while benefiting greatly from the expertise and professional standards upheld by HKIS.
He concluded by expressing heartfelt appreciation for the unwavering support of HKIS and HKU Surveying Alumni, and called for the continuation of these strong partnerships well into the future.
